Ahrefs
Ahrefs is an SEO research tool built around a backlink and keyword database — it shows what's linking to a site and what it (or a competitor) ranks for. That database is built and continuously refreshed by Ahrefs' own web crawler, AhrefsBot.
AhrefsBot has crawled the web since 2010 — every API with comparable backlink data belongs to another company running the same kind of expensive crawl, so connecting to one means paying someone else instead.
What you lose building it yourself
- ✕Competitor backlink data — Google Search Console only shows sites you own
- ✕Breadth — millions of sites, not a handful you scrape
- ✕The 15–30 min refresh cycle the price buys
BUILD YOUR OWN · NOT OFFERED
Matching the data side means running a crawler at billions-of-pages-a-day scale and keeping an index refreshed every 15–30 minutes, indefinitely — a standing infrastructure cost in the seven figures a year, not a weekend project. Entries with a real DIY path get a stack and a prompt here instead; this one doesn't have one.

Free alternative: Screaming Frog — covers on-site crawling for free (up to 500 URLs); nothing free replicates Ahrefs' backlink index, which is the part you're actually paying for
Vendor's own claim
"AhrefsBot is the #1 most active SEO crawler (and 8th most active crawler after Google's and Bing's)."

QUESTIONS
Is there a free tier?
Yes — Ahrefs Free covers basic site data at no cost. Most practitioners will still need Lite ($129/mo) or above for the tools that matter.
How fresh is Ahrefs' data?
Fast enough that a link gained or lost today typically shows up before the workday is over, which matters if you're confirming a placement went live or catching a negative-SEO spam attack while it's still actionable.
Does Ahrefs use AI to generate its data?
No — the backlink and keyword data comes entirely from Ahrefs' own crawl. AI shows up in newer features layered on top, not the core index.
